BRAINBOOSTER EP26 : DAVE O’SULLIVAN – MOVEMENT IS MEDICINE

Today we have a very special guest on the podcast

Dave O’Sullivan is one of the best Physiotherapists in professional sport

He recently came back from Australia with the England rugby league team, who had a successful campaign under legendary coach, Wayne Bennett

I met Dave back in 2013 when we were both working with the Huddersfield Giants in Super League.

The Giants had not won silverware for over eighty years.

Continual story of failure

Doomed to be a ‘minnow’

That season, the Giants won the league leaders trophy

Top of the league

Beating the ‘big’ teams such as Wigan, Leeds and St Helens

For me, one of the main reasons, was what Dave O Sullivan did with the players

He got them back on the pitch after injury in remarkable time, he kept them on the pitch. The long term injuries that plague so many teams was minimal

For me, he worked ‘magic’

Dave has been kind enough to say that a lot of this was down to the fact that he incorporated a LOT of Mind Factor principles

He totally bought into the concept of

‘The Story’

How we all carry a story around with us

If we don’t challenge that story, it will just keep playing out on auto pilot dictating the course of our lives

Dave changed that with the Giants

In this podcast we talk about :

  • How the ‘story’ has affected Dave’s work in terms of both injury recovery and prevention
  • How the mind can be engaged to speed up recovery
  • The vital need to have CLEAR INTENT
  • Most people have a clear idea of what they DON’T want
  • I don’t want to be in pain
  • The brain has little to work with
  • How we can engage the brain to create a really healthy body and effective movement
  • How the language we use around pain and recovery has such a dramatic effect
  • How movement is MEDICINE
  • How your breathing can have such a big impact on injury recovery
  • We are meant to move
  • The effect of variability in our training
  • The need to look at your training program with fresh eyes
  • Creating a great environment for your body to thrive
  • Good and bad coaching environments
  • Why Wayne Bennett is such a great coach

Observations from the frontline of professional sport

If you want to move better, have less pain and a generally healthy life this podcast is a must
